About me

Hi, I’m Jan Warnes, a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist working with children, adolescents, parents and families. I’ve specialised in children and young people’s mental health for 15 years and as a qualified Clinical Psychologist since 2009.
I can offer you in person and online therapy and coaching. I offer a safe, warm and empathic space to begin this work for yourself, your children or your family. I offer empowered client-centered work that can support you to develop tools and techniques to achieve meaningful change aligned with your values.

I’ve worked in a number of different mental health settings and have specialised in the last 5 years working with families, where a young person has a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa. Some of my key interests include working with attachment trauma within families, which includes emotional regulation, resiliency work with children and teens, and re-parenting work with parents. I take a holistic approach, incorporating mind, body and soul, and utilise evidence-based theory.

I also offer group programmes ‘RISE UP’ and ‘SHINE’ for building confidence, reducing anxiety and reducing shame with Teenagers aged 13-18, and Conscious Parenting Programs for Parents who want more self-awareness and harmony in family life, and are ready to break intergenerational loops and patterns of relating to themselves and their children.

Testimonials

Sarah (Parent to Jenny, aged 15), January 2022

In our eyes, Jan has given our daughter back.
After our daughter was struggling with her self worth and anxiety , Jan has shown her how to start loving herself again and accepting how she is feeling is not a bad thing.
Yes this has taken time, but Jan really listens and understands the process of the mind.
We cannot thank Jan enough for her professional and knowledgeable support, always responsive to messages and always happy to help.

Thank you Jan

Jen, aged 21, May 2021

Having a few months of therapy sessions with Jan was one of the best things I have ever done and I believe will make an enormous difference to the rest of my life. Right from day one when I called Jan to ask if she would be happy to take me on as a client (and I cried on the phone!), she listened so well and helped me to understand myself and my brain so much better. I really had no idea what to expect from having support from a psychologist but the whole experience was so positive and I really looked forward to every session. She was kind and compassionate, really listening to and understanding my thoughts and feelings, no matter how massive or seemingly trivial they were. One of the best things was how encouraging Jan was, celebrating both big and small wins with me. This really helped grow my confidence and ability to trust myself and others both in my personal and my work/professional life.

Jan worked with a range of therapeutic approaches to help tailor support that worked well for me, always explains it really well and discussing whether I was happy to engage with a particular activity or approach. Jan made it really clear that I was in control and could continue or stop the sessions as I felt appropriate. There was never any pressure to commit for a certain amount of time and after just the right amount of time, Jan really encouraged me to continue without her, having confidence in me that I was capable and able to continue without regular therapy sessions, but that she is always available should I require further support in the future. I am very much still learning on my journey, but I feel that I now understand myself better and have the tools to be able to continue to learn more independently. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the support I received from Jan and I will always be incredibly grateful for her help.

Anon, 2021

The approaches I’d used with my first child just didn’t work with my second. It was a constant power struggle that I wanted to step away from but didn’t know how.

With Jan’s insights and the supportive space she created in coaching, I was able to explore my own need for control and the way this played out in shutting down my child’s feeling and frustrations (which didn’t go away when I tried to silence them!).

Just a few coaching sessions with Jan completely changed my perspective and approach to parenting an autonomous child. I’m learning to acknowledge and accept those big feelings and allow my child to work through them. The difference this has made to both us is unreal – Thank Jan!

Rach, 2021

I have really enjoyed the parenting coaching sessions with Jan. Being a mum and a psychologist, you can think you won’t fall into the same traps that others do but we all do! I realised even just within that first coaching session that I put a lot of pressure on myself to be the best for my child, and can be highly critical and not think I’m good enough.

The sessions have allowed me to take some pressure off myself, just becoming aware I don’t have to be perfect and what I am doing is good enough.

The sessions have also helped me to think about how I try to fix and solve things for others, some of which led me into my career. I realise I need to allow others in my life to work things out for themselves and just be there to support them.

I have found the sessions invaluable and would recommend them to others!

Helen, 2021

Jan is a lovely, kind person. She put me at ease straight away which meant I felt I could open up. Jan is non-judgmental and very empathic. I felt listened to and understod. I was encouraged to reflect on triggers and factors that contributed to my bullshit stories and then work on how I could change them.

The whole experience has been great and, to be honest, life changing. It has made me feel like I am a good mother and that I am enough. Because I have worked on my BS stories I now spend more quality time with my son and feel that things are OK as they are. I don’t feel a massive pressure to change myself or be a ‘perfect’ mum.

Kian, 2021

I thought the group was very helpful and supportive of anything I said. It helped me gain more confidence and be more comfortable with myself. The challenges were hard and scary at first but it’s much better if you give it a go. I would recommend giving it a go no matter who you are and seeing how far you can push yourself and I guarantee only good will come from it. Thanks again Jan.

Beth, 13th June 2022

If I’m being honest, it was perfect. Everything about it made me feel safe. I loved meeting the other people and knowing I wasn’t alone.
